The Training Centre

ECMT have offices and training facilities in Withernsea where some of our training takes place but we also use venues in Hull, Scarborough, Bridlington, Whitby, Hornsea and various locations across the East and West Coast of England.

We also deliver safety training to crews of British registered vessels abroad.

Our local outdoor training is carried out at Kelsey Gardens, Burstwick.

What do we do?

As a not for profit organisation we provide training to current Fishermen and New Entrants to the Distant Water, Inshore and Shell Fishermen’s fleets of the catching sector of the industry. Training is now provided for other seafarers/maritime industries. We also offer free impartial help and advice on training related matters to anyone involved in the maritime industry, as well as assisting Skippers in creating their own vessel risk assessment/safety management systems.

What areas do we cover?

Ports covered by our area of operation include Redcar, Whitby, Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington, Hornsea, Withernsea, Easington & Grimsby. If requested we deliver courses in other parts of the UK. We also deliver Safety Training to crews of British Registered Fishing Vessels abroad.

How do we do it?

Office Staff - We employ Mrs Kim Jensen our Training Manager/Company Secretary. Kim has been with us for over 34 years and Mr Steve Wood our Assistant Training is our Assisstant Co-ordinator. Kim and |Steve are based in our offices/training facility in Withernsea. Our instructors are both self employed:

Instructors - Mr Len Jensen is a very experienced Trainer and Fisheries Consultant. Len holds all the relevant qualifications to meet our training needs and has over 25 years experience as a Fisherman/Vessel Owner and 24 years’ experience in the training of fishermen. In 2014 Len was joined by Mr Keir Day ex- fishing skipper of 9 years and over 12 years’ experience in training & development. Keir was also in the Royal Navy for 10 years where he specialised in seamanship and safety.

We have all the necessary equipment needed to deliver the training we provide. All of our training courses are designed to be completely mobile, this enables us to deliver training anywhere in the UK and even abroad. We find that bringing training to the customer is very much welcomed as it not only saves our customers the inconvenience of travelling it also cuts down on a lot of subsistance costs for them.

How are we funded?

To generate income to help us provide our services we deliver Seafish funded and non funded training, we also deliver RYA, STCW & MCA approved courses to Fishermen and other seafarers both in the UK and abroad.                                           

We also, co-ordinate Skippers, Mate & Engineers MCA Certificates of Competency through college based learning.

In addition to the above we also provide Vessel Owners/Skippers/Company Managers with help in the recruitment & Training of trainee Deckhands.

What insurance do we hold? 

We hold fully comprehensive insurance being specialist insurance for Training Providers. This policy includes Employer / Public Liability and Professional Indemnity.

Yorkshire Coast Wind Farm

The world’s largest windfarm is to be built in the North Sea 80 miles off the Yorkshire coast

Developer DONG Energy says the Hornsea-1 farm will cover more than 154 square miles and its wind turbines will be 190m tall. It will be able to power over one million UK homes with a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts and is expected to be fully operational in 2020.
